Oregon Wine Experience® Unveils 2019 Best of Show Winners

85 Oregon wineries receive accolades from world-renowned wine experts

JACKSONVILLE, Ore. (Aug. 22, 2019) Three Oregon wines won Best of Show honors under the 30,000 square-foot tent at Oregon Wine Experience® on Thursday evening. The Medal Celebration saluted all of the participating wineries, 85 of which are going home with at least one medal—Silver, Gold, Double Gold or Best of Show.

Wineries across Oregon enter their wines in the Oregon Wine Competition® based on three categories: Specialty, White and Red. Below are the 2019 Best of Show honorees:

  • Specialty: Maison Jussiaume 2016 Blanc de Blancs (Rogue Valley)
  • White: Trium Wines 2018 Viognier (Rogue Valley)
  • Red: Valcan Cellars 2015 Syrah (Willamette Valley)

“For all of Oregon, there are so many varieties that show beautifully well here. This was a great example – this competition – that focuses on the entire state,” says Oregon Wine Competition judge Ellen Landis, Certified Sommelier.

In addition to three Best of Show winners, 26 wineries merited a Double Gold, 36 took Gold and 73 received Silver. The full list of medal recipients is available here. These award-winning wines represent 13 of 15 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in Oregon.

A panel of six experienced judges individually scored 325 wines based on quality, typicity, balance and structure at the Oregon Wine Competition in July. This year’s judges include:

  • Andrey Ivanov, Master Sommelier
  • Ashley Hausman, Master of Wine
  • Deborah Parker Wong, DWSET, Global Wine Editor
  • Ellen Landis, Certified Sommelier, Certified Wine Specialist, Wine Educator
  • Maximilian Kast, Master Sommelier
  • Peter Marks, Master of Wine

“The potential here [for the Oregon Wine Competition] – it could be world-class. It could be on par with Southern Rhône [in France] and with McLaren Vale in Australia,” says Maximilian Kast, Master Sommelier.

The Oregon Wine Competition continues to expand its reach throughout the state. Wineries can submit their wines to Oregon Wine Competition each year between March and June.
